Our mission is to accompany Tseltal communities in Chiapas so they can build self-managed and life worth alternatives, in harmony with their own values.

VISION

Our vision is that the communities of the Chiapas Jungle region improve their quality of life and continue their development in a harmonious and self-managed manner, thanks to this systematized and replicable model.

Respect

We respect the Tseltal culture, when we learn from their wisdom and value their relationship with the environment.

Common Good

We seek the common good, through individual well-being that transcends towards the collective.

Integrity

We conduct ourselves with integrity when engaging in horizontal dialogue with communities and strive to be transparent in our accountability.

We applaud the joy and optimism that allows the celebration of small victories and to be grateful for life.

We believe in innovation, adapting to changing circumstances and modifying our programs as evaluations demonstrate the need for this.

We operate with austerity to manage ourselves efficiently.

Ixim is the mayan word for “corn”

This crop, so important in the Tseltal tradition, food and economy, was in fact the root of our walk and the reason for our name.

Our Origin

The “Fray Bartolomé de las Casas” Human Rights Center organizes Civil Camps for Peace to take care of the displaced families by the 1994 indigenous uprising in Chiapas. Gaby Orozco and Jorge Alessio Robles join these camps and there they witness the great needs of the families of the Selva Lacandona Region of the municipality of Ocosingo, Chiapas. The most pressing need is food and so, they begin to supply corn in the months between harvests to alleviate hunger.

IXIM A.C. is born

As this demand grows, Ixim is formally established as a civil association and acquires the government approval to receive donations. From then until 2009, Ixim collaborated with other civil society organizations, contributing to strengthening community capacities and reestablishing their social fabric.

Sustainability and self development

IXIM seeks to expand its impact, adding to the corn supply, self-development initiatives through orchards, poultry farms, mushroom cultivation, vermicomposts and community cisterns. Thus, self-development is aimed through the community organization of networks of representatives that build learning and multiply it. At the same time, an office is opened in the municipal seat of Ocosingo.

Second place of Vidanta’s Award

In 2013, Fundación Vidanta recognized the work carried out by IXIM in the category “Contributions to the reduction of poverty and inequality in Latin America and the Caribbean.”

Moving towards social and solidarity economy from a healthy Tseltal home

The co-founders of IXIM decide to gradually retire, promoting the evolution of the Association towards the professionalization of the team. At the same time, the support model is renewed. The model “Moving towards Social and Solidarity Economy from a healthy Tseltal home” is the current one and provides 6-year support in the axes of physical, social, environmental and economic well-being. In this new model we are committed to working with women and young people, who are the groups of indigenous communities that have the fewest opportunities to participate and develop.
